Some organic chemistry reactions have reagents and reaction conditions which pose obvious safety concerns. Others require investigation into their scope and application. The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction is a common carbon-carbon bond forming reaction which makes use of organoboranes. Researchers at Dow Agroscience found that upon addition of their palladium catalyst, the reaction gave a slight exotherm. Further evaluation revealed aqueous condition produced much generated heat output, often enough to boil the solvent. Authors caution that without proper cooling, such reaction could run out of control. |
