In undergraduate textbooks reaction mechanism are diagrammed with such certainty that students rarely think to question them. However the reality is that mechanisms are not always well understood. Case in point is the Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction, which has been known since 1968. Computational studies determined the mechanism involved complex proton-shuttle pathway, however a recent paper by Plata and Singleton of Texas A&M casts doubt on that. Using experimental data they have determined that the mechanism is more like a since acid-base reaction. Journal of American Chemical Society, 2015, 137 (11), 3811–3826 |
