Scientists have long used genetic engineering to modify simple bacterium like E. coli to produce medically important molecules like insulin. Recently a team at Miami University in Ohio led by Alexandra Adams has reported the first in vivo production of psilocybin, the prodrug to the hallucinogen psilocin commonly found in magic mushrooms. Psilocybin has recently become a molecule of interest because of its potential as a treatment for addiction, anxiety, depression, and other disorders. Psilocybin is featured in the Functional Groups module of ChemKarta. |
