Carl Djerassi (pronounced jer-AH-see) died on Jan 30, 2015 at the age of 91. He was widely accredited for his contribution to the development of the oral contraceptive pill. During his life he published over 1,200 papers, was awarded the National Medal of Science and the first Wolf Prize in Chemistry, and has been honored on a postage stamp in Austria. In his later life he explored an interest in writing, publishing several novels, plays, and works of poetry. Often called "The Father of the Pill," Djerassi disliked the moniker, as he felt it diminished the contributions of other chemists on the project and ignored his literary contributions. |
