While best remembered for his work in infections diseases, Louis Pasteur was originally trained as a chemist with an emphasis in crystallography. He was the first to demonstrate the existence of chiral molecules by isolating the two enantiomers of tartaric acid. The main source for tartaric acid was from winemakers, which naturally lead to his interest in fermentation and microbiology. |
