While work is being done to search for new treatments for Ebola, some researchers are looking to repurpose existing drugs that have already been approved for other treatments. One such drug is amiodarone, a multi-channel ion blocker that is used to treat cardiac dysrhythmia. Amiodarone has been shown to inhibit entry of Ebola virus into host cells, one of the initial steps of infection. However, the drug has several side effects, including thyroid abnormalities and treatment must be carefully monitored. Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy 2014, 69, 2123. |
